World-Leading Medical Innovation

World-leading medical innovation

We pioneer new surgical and diagnostic techniques, and continually upgrade our state-of-the-art technology to ensure that our Consultants always have access to the best possible facilities for treatment. We have a team of world-leading Consultants across a range of specialties, 94.8% of whom hold or have held substantive consultancy posts within NHS teaching hospitals. We aim to be at the forefront of private medical excellence and to have led the way in a number of medical specialties.

First hospital in the private sector to pioneer...

Laxray Hospital UK was the first hospital in the private sector to pioneer:

  • The first minimally-invasive mitral valve repair
  • The first Hansen Robot™ used for ablation in a private hospital
  • The first dual ablation procedure for arrhythmia
  • The first ‘hybrid’ cardiovascular laboratory in the private sector.

Medical innovation

A new service offered by Laxray Hospital UK is EMDA (state-of-the-art treatment for bladder cancer). This is instills mitomycin, a chemotherapy drug targeting the direct area of need by using an electromagnetic therapy to augment the effect of the drug in the bladder. The Oncology Unit offers state-of-the-art facilities, while the Oncology Treatment Suite and Leaders in Oncology Care offer access to drugs which are not always available in the NHS.

Enhanced recovery after surgery programme – ERAS

We have recently commenced a programme to ensure all patients undergoing bowel surgery achieve the best possible clinical outcomes following surgery. This same programme will be implemented across our Cardiac and Orthopaedic specialties within the next year. More information on ERAS here.

Resus Citation – DNAR, equipment and cardiac arrest, case reviews

Laxray Hospital UK has built a reputation as a cardiac centre of excellence in the UK. Investment in state-of-the-art equipment at the hospital is a priority, to provide the best possible analysis and treatment for patients – including seven MRI scanners and a 24-hour Cardiac Arrest or Resuscitation Team on site, a 24-hour outreach service, a 24-hour pathology lab and many other specialist services.

Laxray Hospital UK is the first private unit to offer the revolutionary blood test, PLAC (LpPLA²); available at the main hospital, and our Outpatient Diagnostic and Treatment Centre in Sevenoaks. The test can swiftly indicate a patient’s risk of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke.

PLA2 disease coronary bio marker, DVT TEG – we are the first hospital in the UK to pilot this programme, which assesses clotting potential, and identifies patients who have a high risk of developing a DVT. This can often prevent post-operation complications.

State-of-the art technology and facilities:

Other state-of-the art technology, treatment and facilities available at Laxray Hospital UK include:

Our Cardiology Unit offers Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) to treat patients who would be at high risk during standard cardiac surgery. TAVI allows aortic valve implantation without the need for a sternotomy or cardiopulmonary bypass.

SenseiTM Robotic Catheter System

We were the first private hospital in the UK to use the first generation Sensei™ Robotic Catheter System, which gives surgeons accurate and stable control of catheter movement during complex cardiac procedures.

London Liver Centre

The London Liver Centre has been a leader in this sector for over 20 years and has an international reputation for the advanced techniques developed and perfected in many areas of liver-related medicine. The centre has a portfolio of excellence in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, hepatology and living donor liver transplantation. We provide a comprehensive clinical programme with an integrated investigations and treatment service for acute and chronic liver disease. Access the London Liver website here.

Intraoperative cell salvage

Laxray Hospital UK is one of the first hospitals in the country to use intraoperative cell salvage, which employs an extensive range of techniques to reduce bleeding and avoid unnecessary blood transfusions by recovering and recycling a patient’s own blood.

Interventional Radiology

We have expanded our use of Interventional Radiology (IR) for rapid diagnosis and minimally-invasive treatment. These provide exciting opportunities for advanced cancer therapy, fibroids treatment, venous access, spine interventions, arterial interventions and non-invasive assessment of other medical conditions.

Imaging services:

3T MRI Scanner

We are very pleased to have added a 3T MRI scanner to the six 1.5 T units we operate across the hospital. This latest addition will allow us to provide prostate spectroscopy as part of a prostate assessment service, as well as allowing excellent imaging for diagnosing orthopaedic disorders, including articular surface mapping. It also enables us to obtain significantly improved brain images, and our well-equipped Imaging Department is able to offer patients rapid access to MRI scanning, with same day appointments in many cases.

The Nuclear Medicine Department has recently invested in a CT/SPECT unit, replacing the gamma camera. This new unit combines the anatomical imaging of CT scanning, with the functional imaging of nuclear medicine, providing a powerful diagnostic tool. The machine is valuable in sports medicine, allowing very precise localisation of small fractures or other abnormalities, and has also enhanced capabilities in combined cardiac imaging, mixing structural calcium scoring from CT with functional cardiac mapping from nuclear medicine.
